Wildflower meadows
In the past herb rich meadows/wildflower meadows were a common sight across the countryside. But due to agricultural fertilizers the numbers have declined . Wildflower meadows are the best way to add species to a piece of land and also provide an array of colour, seeds provide food for birds, nectar from the flowers will provide food for bees and butterflies. It is possible to get wildflower species back on to a piece of land through careful management . But for quicker results it is better to re-seed the land with wildflower seeds. Beetle banks can be built into the meadow to provide a dryer habitat for some species. We can provide the whole process from soil testing right through to the correct mowing procedures.
Plant species surveys
Plant species surveys provide you with information about the amount and the variety of species you have on a piece of land. This information could be used for your own interest or in conjunction with a habitat improvement plan. We can carry out surveys and undertake relevant improvement plans.
Tree planting
Even planting just a few specimen trees will help the environment, we can source and plant native or ornamental trees in the garden or field situation.
Invasive Species Clearance
Some times valuable habitats are taken over by very invasive plant species . This in turn stops light getting to other rarer flora and they die out, for example bramble in woodland, ivy on trees, perennial rye grass in meadows and rushes in pastures. If left these species will destroy the variety in an area. We provide advice and clearance of these species.
Ponds
Ponds are an unique feature in the rural landscape and are becoming one of the rarest to find. Since the second world war over half a million have vanished, due to the changes in farming practices. Ponds provide water and every living thing needs water to survive. This is why ponds have the potential to attract new species quite soon after being created. Even garden ponds are beneficial to wildlife. You can expect an increase in insects, birds, frogs.
We can plan and create ponds in the garden or field situation, even a small pond can make a big difference to wildlife.
